January 28, 1986, 73 seconds seconds after liftoff, space shuttle Challenger exploded as thousands watched the launch in person and on television. I remember watching at school in the auditorium.  All went quiet, the principal leaned over and turned off the tv.  All seven astronauts on board were killed. It became one of the most iconic live breaking news events in tv history
