In partnership with the City of Calgary

It’s been a really long winter of binging TV and video calls. Many of us miss seeing our friends and family, and some of the fun stuff we did pre-pandemic. Staying active is very important for your physical and mental health— and  luckily we live in an incredible winter city. Clear your mind and get moving with some of these fun winter activities.

Tobogganing & Sledding – Take advantage of the snow and get a cheap thrill on your sled or toboggan. Our city is full of hills of all sizes, perfect for people of all skill and thrill levels. Check out a full list of city-maintained hills here.  Don’t forget your helmet!

Cross-country Skiing & Snowshoeing -– Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in Calgary is an exhilarating way to get active and enjoy the beauty of our snow-covered landscapes. There are several dedicated cross-country skiing tracks available in and around the city.   There’s Bowness Park, South Glenmore Park, Edworthy Park, and more.  Click here for a list of groomed and ungroomed areas to try out.

Outdoor Ice Skating – Lace up your skates and get on the ice at an outdoor rink this winter.  There are seven city maintained outdoor skating rink locations that are free to use on a first-come-first-served basis.  There’s at least one rink in every quadrant of the city so you won’t have to travel far!  Check out the list of free outdoor rinks here.

Winter Walks – Let the cold air clear your mind and reduce stress.  Take a winter walk to improve your health and explore the paths in your community.  Venture around your neighbourhood or plan a walk on one of the many pathways in the city.  Calgary has the most extensive urban pathway and bikeway network in North America. The City maintains approximately 1,000 km of regional pathways and 96 km of trails.  Click here for maps to plan your outing.

Fun in Your Backyard – You don’t have to venture far from your door to get fresh air and have fun!  There are plenty of things you can do in your own yard to enjoy the snow and winter.  Build a snowman, or snow family, and use items from around the house to outfit them.  If you’re feeling a little more creative, try snow colouring.  Fill a spray or squeeze bottle with water, add a few drops of food colouring, then let your imagination go.  Create faces, designs or messages in the snow.
