Calgary police have issued a public warning about the release of a man convicted of sexual assault.

47-year old Douglas Gordon Jenik was released into the public on Thursday after serving a two-year sentence for sexual assault and committing an indecent act in public.

Jenik has been designated a dangerous offender.

Calgary Police says Correctional Service Canada has the responsibility of monitoring of offenders on statutory release, however they made a decision to issue a notification in the interest of public safety.

Police say the purpose behind the release of the information is to enable members of the public to take suitable precautionary measures and not to embark on any form of vigilante action.
